Bacalar collaborative mural

As part of the “Mesoamerican reef day 2025” I was invited to create a mural in Bacalar (Quintana Roo/Mexico).
The Bacalar Laguna is a beautiful & fragile marine ecosystem. This freshwater lake (second biggest in Mexico) is home to a colony of StromatolitesThe oldest form of life on planet Earth (appeared between 2,500 and 1,000 million years ago) that can be found alive in only very few places.

Stromatolites are sedimentary structures of calcium carbonate that host great microorganism colonies (cyanobacteria) living in symbiosis.
Stromatolites are a great filter to preserve the clean water of the lagoon and also act like trees by capturing CO2 and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere.

To pay tribute to this rare and precious life form, I created a mural artwork inspired by the biodiversity of Quintana Roo and the Yucatan peninsula.

The mural was painted for the celebration of the “MAR DAY” & “Meso-American reef day“. This project integrated a strong “collaborative approach” in its DNA.
The Bacalar’s local community was actively involved and people from the village helped by painting the mural.
