The aim of this project is to to propose a cultural activity combining oceanographic science with various artistic practices. The objective is to help raise awareness of the ocean’s climate challenges and the need to safeguard them.
The Marine Cathedral
Multi-artistic proposal created for an

Size : 250X122cm / IN: 98,4 X 48
Year : 2024
By creating a bridge between “Art and Science”, the “Blue Genes oceans community“, of which I am a member, has imagined and developed a “collaborative activity” where the public exchange their knowledge, give their point of view, and share their relationship with the oceans.
“The Marine Cathedral” giant collaborative puzzle project takes the form of a large illustrated fresco resembling a cathedral stained-glass window. The composition depicts the richness and diversity of the ocean’s marine life.
This biodiversity is fragile and is in the process of being really damaged by human activity, which is constantly putting pressure on marine ecosystems.
The activity begins by inviting the viewer to immerse himself in the story: This stained glass window harmonious scene of marine biodiversity fell to pieces on the floor.
The spectator arrives in the middle of an “ecological crime scene”. The public can restore and reconstruct this image by answering questions, giving their opinion, and sharing their personal experience/relationship with the marine environment.
Through the activity, piece by piece, the public can reconstruct this harmonious scene and participate in its restoration.
Through this metaphor of “broken glass”, the activity proposes a playful way of empowering and reconnecting the public with the challenges that are facing the oceans.
Thanks to the scientists who are conducting this dialogue and to the various forms of art (such as poetry, music…), the spectator takes an active part in finding solutions and playing a central role in the realization of this activity.
The puzzle is created from recycled plastic, part of which comes from marine waste recovered by fishermen and transformed by the Plastic preciós “La Safor”association.
This proposal for a giant collaborative puzzle was presented for the first time at the Fes!Cultura #accioclima 2024 festival in Barcelona (at the Fabra I Coats art center).
Created as part of the “mission ocean & waters” “Prep4Blue” pilot activity.
